It’s Christmas Eve and here I am in the
garden and there are blooms from First
and Foremost Rose. I never had that
luck in New York. Is this what gardening
in the south is?
It came to mine the lovely hymn originally
published in 1582 in Gebetbuchlein des
Frater Conradus
whose German words “Es ist ein Ros entsprungen”, were inspired by the Song of
Solomon, 2:1 referring to Mary: I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.”
Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming from tender stem
hath sprung!
Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as men of old have
sung.
It came, a floweret
bright, amid the cold of winter,
When half spent
was the night.
Isaiah ‘twas
foretold it, the Rose I have in mind,
Mary we behold it,
the Virgin Mother kind.
To show God’s love
aright, she bore to us a Savior,
When half spent
was the night.
The words and music appeared in Katholischer Geistlicher
Kirchengesang in 1599. Among the
many English adaptations, the best known is by Theodore Baker (1851-1934). I remember singing it all the time during
Advent with the Diocesan Choir of Rockville Centre in New York and also with my
church choir at St. Dominic Church in Oyster Bay, New York.
