ROSE DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

“To remember, lest we forget.”

Today, Sept. 11, let us remember the fallen and celebrate life, liberty and freedom through roses.

 

 

Firefighter, a beautiful dark red hybrid tea hybridized by Orard in 1999, is the first of the eleven roses to be named for the Remember Me Rose Gardens to honor the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 while trying to save lives in the World Trade Center.  Firefighter also honors those men and women who risk their lives daily to protect ours. 

 

 

Firefighter is a tall hybrid tea about 5-6 ft tall with a perfect flower form, about 4-6 inches and disease resistant.  Petal count is about 40-45 and has a very strong fragrance.  Firefighter won the City of Portland Gold Medal Award for 2007. 

To honor and pay tribute to all the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Sue Casey of Portland, Oregon formed an organization called Remember Me Rose Gardens to create three rose gardens on or near the sites of the terrorist attacks in New York, at the Pentagon and at a field in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County in Pennsylvania. 

 

"REMEMBER ME" ROSE GARDEN

There isn’t an American who is not affected by the events of September 11, 2001. Sue Casey wanted a living memorial for the victims and survivors of September 11, 2001 so she founded the “Remember Me” Rose Gardens in each area to honor those whose lives were lost and all who honor freedom. “Remember Me” Rose Gardens were created on or near each of the three sites to honor the spirit of the men and women whose lives were lost in New York, at the Pentagon, and at a field in Shade Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. 

We have always given roses to show sympathy and share the grief of our loved ones.  In our darkest hours, the rose extends her beauty and provides solace to us.  Always there, always comforting, always reassuring, the Rose, our National Floral Emblem, has always been a symbol of life, liberty and freedom. Let us continue to give roses and plant roses in the spirit of freedom. I saw this poem on a tablet in a memorial garden dedicated to those who died on September 11, 2001 attack. The garden is planted with David Austin Roses.

I am the Diamond glint on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle Autumn rain.

When you waken in the mornings hush,

I am the swift, uplifting rush

Of quiet bird in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone.

I am with you still, in each new dawn.

A MEMORIAL ROSE GARDEN FOR 9-11

 This is the rose garden at the home of Thomas and Carol O'Neill, on Long Island, that  was dedicated as a memorial to those who died on Sept. 11, 2001 - specifically those who perished at the offices of Sandler, O'Neill & Partners, LLP on the 104^th floor of Two World Trade Center.  This beautiful garden is planted with David Austin Roses.  At one end of the garden, in between the two rose beds is a tablet with this poem:

I give you this one thought to keep.

I am with you still, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

Roses are easy plants to grow contrary to popular belief. Why do you think Roses have been around for millions of years?  All they need are food, water and sunlight.  Just like you and me.
