LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP

To my dear friend, Grace Tedesco, who considered me as a daughter, this poem is for her.  She passed away this year at the age of 101 and had been married for 76 years. She was a great lover of rose, most notably Queen Elizabeth which she exhibited up to the age of 97 always winning a blue ribbon for Queen Elizabeth.  In Oyster Bay, she was the Rose Queen and I was the Rose Lady. If not for the fall accident which she had after showing her roses at the Long Island Rose Society Rose Show in 2007, she would probably be still exhibiting. She was a true and loyal friend to the end.  I miss her and her constant advice that I should slow down.  Great advice from a true friend which someday I might follow.

Love is like the wild rose-briar,

Friendship like the holly-tree –

The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms

But which will bloom most constantly?

Its summer blossoms scent the air;

Yet wait till winter comes again

Roses are not difficult to grow contrary to popular belief as long as you know what they need. Why do you think Roses have been around for millions of years?  All they need are food, water and sunlight.  Just like you and me.

WOMEN AND ROSES

A poem by Robert Browning dedicated to women and roses -

The dream of a red-rose tree.

And which of its roses three

Is the dearest rose to me?

Round and round, like a dance of snow

In a dazzling drift, as its guardians, go

Floating the women faded for ages,

Scultured in stone, on the poet’s pages.

Then follow women fresh and gay,

Living and loving and loved to-day.

Last, in the rear, flee the multitude of maidens,

THE ROSE OF THE WORLD

Who dreamed that beauty passes like a dream?

Contrary to popular belief, it is not difficult to grow Roses.  It all depends on what kind of roses you want to grow.  Roses have been around for millions of years, some in cemeteries with no care whatsoever.  All they need are food, water and sunlight.  Just like you and me.
